Multiples…When to Discard

When we discover a product we love, we often buy multiple items of it. These products can include clothing, shampoo, shoes, tools, and much more.

But when is the right time to reduce the number of these duplicates? Do we need multiples?

There are several "rules" for organizing and deciding whether to keep or discard duplicates. Not every rule will be helpful for your situation, but let's explore different approaches and see if one resonates with you.

  1. "Does it Spark Joy?" is the Marie Kondo method for discarding. When you look at this product, are you in love with it? Does it spark joy?

  2. "Haven't worn it in a year". This rule is excellent for discarding clothes. If you haven't worn that piece of clothing in a year, this is a sign to let go.

  3. "Five-Second Rule". When decluttering and organizing, give yourself five seconds to decide if the product stays. If you can't decide, consider letting go.

  4. "90/90 Rule". If you haven't worn that article of clothing in 90 days (3 months) and don't see yourself wearing it again in 90 days, then discard it.

These "rules" can assist you if you're struggling to discard items. What are some basic key signs to watch for when organizing and eliminating multiples of a particular product?

  1. Condition of the product

    1. Clothes and Shoes: watch for thinning of fabric, wear and tear, stains, and shrinkage.

    2. Tools: Wear and tear, damaged

    3. Beauty products: Expired

  2. Frequency of use or wear

    1. Clothes: How often is it worn?

    2. Tools: Is it still useful?

    3. Beauty: How often do you use it?

  3. Is it expired?

    1. Any product, whether food, beauty, or cleaning, should be checked for its expiration date. This will determine the quality of the product.

  4. Personal preference

    1. When buying products, opt for comfortable clothes that suit your style. Buy the tools that are useful in everyday projects at home.

In the end, remember that we have all the products we love. We don't need them in multiples, especially in every color!
